Mechanical Engineer (Propulsion)

Position Summary

Aevum propulsion team is seeking an experienced mechanical engineer to design and fly primary propulsion structures of the Ravn launch vehicle. You will be responsible for specifying, designing, and validating structures and tools. The mechanical engineer will report directly to the propulsion IPT lead. In this role, the mechanical engineer must work across multiple teams at Aevum to succeed. The ideal candidate is fluent in structural design, analysis, and has experience designing, manufacturing, and delivering hardware products. The most successful candidate possesses strong understanding of manufacturing concepts.

  • Design, analyze, develop, test, manufacture, and fly spaceflight hardware

  • Design and manufacture tooling for fabrication, assembly, and servicing

  • Design and develop concepts and perform trade studies

  • Support the development of assembly and manufacturing processes

  • Learn and stay updated with latest industry practices and design standards and apply knowledge in hardware design

  • Work closely with and help manage contractors, vendors, and suppliers to select and procure off-the-shelf hardware to incorporate into final product

  • Lead internal design reviews and support third party reviews with suppliers and customers

  • Take full ownership of hardware from initial design specifications to spaceflight

  • Review past aerospace programs and develop a comprehensive understanding and apply in designing next generation of launch vehicle structures

  • Analyze joints and structures for coupled loads

  • Document mathematical methods, analysis, and test results

  • Create, present, and lead design reviews

  • Perform peer review of designs

  • Create and review engineering drawings

  • Support derivation of requirements

  • Create design specification documents

  • Perform prototpyping, production, and maintence cost analysis and present to leadership

  • Perform coupled loads analysis including line loads, thermal, vibration, etc.

  • Design and test various joints and mounting structures

Basic Qualifications, Preferred Skills, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related engineering design field from ABET accredited program

  • At least 2 years of industry experience in mechnical design

  • Strong working knowledge of engineering fundamentals with demonstrated applied engineering success

  • Strong CAD experience; Solidworks experience is a plus

  • Proficient knowledge of GD&T

  • FEA experience; ANSYS experience is a plus

  • Tooling design for assembly and manufacturing

  • Some hands-on experience fabricating and building hardware

  • Strong knowledge of machine shop capabilities and fabrication techniques

  • Demonstrated ability to think critically, research information, and solve challenging problems

  • Experience managing suppliers, vendors, and contractor through design specifications, drawings, statements of work, deliverables, and milestones

  • Experience with project management, project schedules, tasks, and program requirements

  • Ability to work independently with minimum oversight; strong initiative to move the program forward

  • Demonstrated ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment with a proactive mindset

  • Effective communication and documentation skills

  • Knowledge of welding, brazing, diffusion bonding, and other methods of creating fixed joints

  • Additive manufacturing knowledge is a plus

Additional Requirements

  • Travel will be required to visit vendors, suppliers, and contractors as well as to support the development of Aevum engineering facilities and spaceports

  • Intermittently able to longer hours and weekends to support time-critical tasks
